SHINA INC.
HAS BEEN GIVEN THE BEST IN AMERICA
SEAL OF EXCELLENCE

award

The Independent Charities Seal of Excellence is awarded to the members of Independent Charities of America and Local Independent Charities of America that have, upon rigorous independent review, been able to certify, document, and demonstrate on an annual basis that they meet the highest standards of public accountability, program effectiveness, and cost effectiveness. These standards include those required by the US Government for inclusion in the Combined Federal Campaign, probably the most exclusive fund drive in the world. Of the 1,000,000 charities operating in the United States today, it is estimated that fewer than 50,000, or 5 percent, meet or exceed these standards, and, of those, fewer than 2,000 have been awarded this Seal.

SHINA, Inc. is a 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization founded in 2002 based in Maryland.  The word Shina (pronounced sh-EE-na) is derived from the Kiswahili language meaning: "roots" and/or the "thick trunk" of a tree. Through our programs in the Washington, DC Metro area and Africa, Shina produces a deep rooted foundation for a healthy and strong community.

Our Purpose:

Our purpose is Helping the Most Vulnerable groups of women, children and youth. We strive to bring positive change to those not helped by other programs.

Our Vision:

is encapsulated within our acronym: SHINA: To Send Hope Inspire and Nourish by utilizing Accumulated knowledge and skills.  We promote and encourage beneficiaries to transform their lives by working predominantly at community level and collaborate with grass-roots organizations in rural areas that tend to be overlooked due to the high concentration of donors in urban areas.

Mission:

Our mission is to promote, encourage and foster better understanding between communities in the United States, and those in Africa.  We reach and touch those who are less fortunate; through the exchange of ideas, support and aid in the areas of need in educational, economic, social and cultural development to empower themselves.

Goals and Objective:

  • Empower women and youth through education and dissemination of information
  • Help women and youth prevail through leadership development and training
  • Committed to policy and advocacy on women and youth issues
  • Advocate for access to health services and health facilities for women and youth
  • Foster economic skills, potentials and abilities
  • Maintain and demonstrate spirit of cultural enrichment through cultural heritage
